Andromeda's death is unexpected and her deterioration quick. Before Harry has even come to terms with the idea of her not being there anymore his four year old godson is living in the room opposite his. Teddy is his responsibility now. No more turning up to play games and bring presents. Harry has to learn to be a parent. Of course, when he first learned of Remus and Nymphadora's death he considered the idea of raising Teddy but Andromeda had stepped in and insisted she do it. Harry was always there to support her physically and financially but he had the easier time of it. Writing his memoirs and political books trying to force the population of Magical Britain to think about politics properly gives him a lot of free time but still, Teddy seems so much work.
Andromeda's last wish that Teddy get to know his family is hard on him. Writing that first letter to Malfoy had been harder still but he had done it because he never expected to get a reply. Of course when the owl returns with a fancy envelope attached to its leg Harry can't help but scowl. Malfoy is polite and offers to meet Harry and Teddy wherever Harry wants. Family, he writes, means everything. That was the lesson he really took from the war. To test the waters about how sincere Malfoy is Harry picks a muggle pub and tells Malfoy he will need to wear Muggle clothes. The pub is near enough to their home but far enough away to be safe. It comes with a soft play and offers pictures and crayons for the children to play at the table. Harry puts Teddy in his best clothes and certainly does not worry about what Malfoy might think if he chooses to turn up. No, that is not a worry at all.
Teddy is colouring a muggle version of a dragon and a wizard when Malfoy makes his way nervously into the building and is led by a waitress to their table. Harry is utterly dumfounded. He actually showed.
"Afternoon Potter. This must be young Edward."
Harry is given a few precious moments to control himself when Teddy looks up from his crayons and scowls.
"It's Teddy!"
"My mistake. Teddy it is. I am Draco."
Harry finds his way to his feet and offers his hand across the table which Malfoy takes. "Thanks for coming, Draco. Teddy, this is your cousin. Or he was your mum's cousin but he wants to meet you."
"Really?" Teddy says shyly, his eyes finding the table.
Harry is shocked when Malfoy rounds the table and crouches down beside the lad. "Really. I have waited a long time to get to know you. Little Teddy."
"I'm not little. I'm four!"
"Ah, another mistake. A whole four years. Such a big boy."
"Yep. I can write my name and everything. Gran taught me before she...before she..."
"So clever!" Malfoy interrupts, reaching out to lift Teddy's chin. " Can you show me on your paper there?"
Teddy's face lights up and Harry gestures to the seat he had been occupying beside Teddy. Malfoy offers a nod and takes it, humming and awing in the relevant places as Teddy scrawls his name out in large blue letters.
"I'm going to be so ahead when I go to school! None of my friends can write their names yet."
"This is the school Weasley has set up? Following some muggle system?"
"Yes," Harry begins carefully, all too aware of the Malfoy and Weasley feud. "Molly has set up a little primary school for the magical kids on their land. Not very big but I think the idea might take hold."
"Quite." Malfoy states calmly, though Harry very much feels he has plenty of things to say on the matter. The world is changing though . "I am sure you will do magnificently. It is good that whose who cannot afford tutors have other options."
"I want fish fingers, Uncle Harry. And cola. No peas."
"Yes, Teddy, you have told me that three times already. I am not going to forget, don't worry." Harry states with humour in his voice. This prompts Malfoy to gingerly pick up the menu and begin flipping through it. He quickly decides on chicken and potatoes and switches to the wine menu. Harry is amused at how Malfoy apparently thought muggle food would be so different.
"Do you drink wine, Harry?"
"Er, yeah, white ones that are not too fruity."
"Good choice. Fancy splitting a bottle? They have a French one I actually recognize. Never realise it was muggle made." Malfoy says, shocking Harry with the offer. It seems, well, nice.
"Sure." Draco nods and when the waitress comes over his face shows no sign of disgust as he orders his meal and the wine. Harry adds on his own order and Teddy's and it all feels very peaceful and not at all like he expected. Draco behaves the whole time and at the end of it all while he tries not to look nervous it is Teddy who excitedly asks that they can meet again. Harry agrees and lets Draco pick a wizarding establishment.
Then he goes home and wonders why in Merlin's name he thought that was a good idea.
*
"Right Teddy, into your cloak. And remember-"
"Best behaviour. Yes, uncle."
"Right. Good. Cloak." Harry stammers while throwing his own on. Harry has never heard of the name on the parchment Malfoy had sent over and he is really hoping it is not too posh. Teddy is not a quite child, no not at all.
It was only fair that their next meeting take place in a Magical restaurant but Harry does not know a lot about those. Still, he won't be accused of being unfair and he did promise Andromeda. So, off they go into the fireplace with Teddy landing gracefully and Harry, as usual, nearly falling flat on his face.
"Draco!" Teddy is off in a flash and Harry is still getting his bearings when he sees Malfoy lift Teddy off the ground and spin him in a circle. It does not fit with the image he has of Malfoy at all. Not even a little bit.
"How are we today young man?"
"I'm good. I learned more numbers this week!"
"Fantastic. I want to hear all about them. Have a seat."
Harry arrives to find a glass of wine waiting for him and Malfoy and some pumpkin juice for Teddy. He gratefully takes a sip and can't help the smile as Teddy happily shuffles into his seat with his big cousin's help. Teddy wastes no time in showing his new ability to count to twenty five and then telling Malfoy every other detail about his week. It has not taken long for Teddy to take a shine to the other man and in a way Harry is glad. As awkward as it is, people need family. As much as he himself loves the Weasleys, he is always aware of how there are always jokes he will never understand and can't help but wonder if blood relations would change that. People chose family, of that Harry has no doubt, but feeling there is a relation out there in another way is a pretty important thing too. Or at least Harry thinks so. Maybe that is because he lacks a blood family but he can never know that for sure.
The meal is ordered without another word coming Harry's way. Malfoy looks up at one point but Harry just smiles. Teddy is the whole point of this and he is happy so let him and Malfoy ramble away. He doesn't expect the way he is violently dragged back into the conversation.
"But Uncle Harry say he will show me the patronus when I'm older, eh uncle?"
Malfoy's eyes are fixed on him and in that instance Harry realises Malfoy cannot produce one of his own. Harry has to make sure Teddy does not ask him about it. That is a whole host of things no one needs to be talking about in front of Teddy.
"That is right. Though we talked about how it is very complex magic didn't we? And how certain people have certain gifts for certain types of magic. We can try though. Though, what did we say we needed?"
"Happy memories!"
"That is right," Harry states with a gentle smile, "Happy memories like this time you are spending with Draco! You are telling him all about you do for fun, why not ask him?"
"Oh! Good idea! Draco, what do you do for fun? Do you like Quidditch? I do. I like to watch Aunty Ginny kick a- I mean, do good."
It feels oddly normal and comfortable and when they have to leave Teddy is ready to throw a tantrum until Harry invites Draco around for lunch the following Saturday. That will let Teddy show Draco his room he says to himself. Then he goes home and wonders when Malfoy became Draco.
*
For months they get closer and Harry ignores it. Draco sits on his couch with his shoes off and Teddy curls into his side and listens to a story and Harry says it is nothing. Teddy demands Draco stay to see a movie that ends with Teddy asleep and Draco putting him to bed and Harry says it is nothing. It means nothing that Draco took in muggle entertainment and the content loving smile he gave Teddy before he left certainly means nothing at all. Not a damn thing.
"Uncle? Do you love Draco?"
The bottle of milk Harry is carrying hits the floor, shatters, and sends Harry into a fit. He cleans it up the muggle way to avoid answering Teddy's question and then he tells Teddy to go to the living room while he adds a drop of whiskey to his tea before following.
"What on earth makes you say that?"
"Well we do things together and you put me to bed together and when Draco is here you laugh and are happy. You both look at each other all the time and Vicky says that means you love him." Teddy states, all matter of fact as he takes his cup of milky tea and continues doing his jigsaw.
"We do those things for you, Teddy. Nothing more."
*
Harry agrees with his statement for all of a month but in that month he watches Draco. He has another glass of wine when he could leave. He comes early and has a cup of tea before Teddy wakes up. He is eager to do whatever Teddy and Harry want him to do. Harry is screwed. When Draco suggests Teddy and Harry meet his parents Harry realises he is really screwed. They really have been dating in a sort of way with Teddy in the middle.
At first he freaks out because Teddy should not be the middle of anything other than a loving home.
Then he freaks out because that is a lot like he has created with Draco.
Harry Potter has fallen in love with Draco Malfoy and managed not to notice it while his 4 year old Godson did. Would his life ever be normal?
